Mission to Ord Mantell (Dash Rendar)

The Second Mission to Ord Mantell involved Dash Rendar, dispatched by the Rebel Alliance. His mission was to locate and interrogate IG-88D, one of the four IG-88 assassin droids, regarding the whereabouts of Boba Fett. Fett, a Mandalorian bounty hunter, was holding Han Solo, Rendar's friend and a crucial Rebel, captive in carbonite.

Background

IG-2000 and Boba Fett engaged in an aerial battle above Tatooine. Following this intense fight, the IG-2000 sustained heavy damage from the Slave I's weaponry. IG-88D, heavily damaged, barely made it to Ord Mantell in search of replacement parts for his vessel within the planet's extensive scrapyard.

Rendar, aware that IG-88 possessed vital information about Fett's location, gathered intelligence on the preceding battle. He then tracked IG-88 to Ord Mantell, landing his ship, the Outrider, in the junkyard.

The skirmish

IG-88 had barricaded himself inside the main salvage processing plant, sealing off the entrance gate. LE-BO2D9, Rendar's droid assistant also known as Leebo, reprogrammed a hovertrain to crash into the plant, creating an entry point for Rendar. The assassin droid anticipated this move and established defenses along the hovertrain tracks, which included mercenaries, airspeeders, drones, and dogbots.

These defenses proved ineffective against Rendar, who successfully overcame the resistance and boarded the train, proceeding towards the processing plant. After a brief exchange with IG-88, he learned that Fett was on Gall. The assassin droid then attacked. After a prolonged and fierce confrontation, IG-88 was defeated, and its deactivated droid shell collapsed to the ground.

Behind the scenes

The mission is detailed within a story outline dated April 17, 1995. Ord Mantell was selected due to its prior mention in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, where Han Solo referenced an encounter with bounty hunters. According to the game's developers, Dash Rendar, given his association with individuals similar to Han Solo, would naturally seek out other "shady characters" to gather information.

Paul Topolos created the concept art for the salvage factory.
