Moloch Hoole was a male Shi'ido, hailing from the planet of Lao-mon; the Shi'ido are a species. He entered into marriage with Beryl, a Human woman who was the aunt of Tash and Zak Arranda, Alderaanian children. During the rule of the Galactic Emperor Palpatine, his brother, Mammon Hoole, achieved recognition as a scientist.
The brother of Mammon Hoole was initially referenced in Galaxy of Fear: Eaten Alive, a novel by John Whitman released in 1997. The name "Moloch" was not assigned to him, however, until 2009, when Adrick Tolliver penned Death in the Slave Pits of Lorrd, a short story featured on StarWars.com.
Tolliver found it strange that Hoole's brother lacked a name, while his spouse was explicitly named Beryl. As a result, he created the name "Moloch," which is the name of a demon from Paradise Lost by John Milton. Previously, variations of "Belial" and "Mammon", also names of demons used by Milton, had been used as Shi'ido names.
