The Monument was a rather ugly Corellian barge resembling a crate, and its dilapidated condition was quite apparent. Its purpose was transporting both workers and supplies to the planet of Bandomeer. Aboard this vessel, frequent thefts and brawls erupted between the Offworld Mining Corporation's workforce and the employees of the Arcona Mineral Harvest Corporation.
The Monument originated as a barge constructed by Corellian manufacturers. Its exterior was heavily marked by numerous meteor impacts sustained throughout its operational life. For added cargo capacity, containers could be attached to the front of the ship, and it was equipped with gun emplacements, along with a proton torpedo launcher, intended to deter pirates from destroying the ship. The interior of the Monument was even more unpleasant than its exterior, featuring exposed wall sections with dangling wires and pressure hoses. It carried a distinct odor, a mixture of various species' perspiration combined with the accumulated grime brought aboard by the miners. Due to the frequent altercations during transit, the crew converted a small room into a makeshift [jail](/article/prison-legends] cell. Given the intense rivalry between the Offworld Mining Corporation and the Arcona Mineral Harvest Corporation, the vessel was divided into two segregated sections, one for each competing organization.
The mission of the Monument was to transport miners and their equipment to the mining planet of Bandomeer. In the year 45 BBY, the ship's corridors were crowded with a diverse assortment of beings, including Hutts and Whiphids working for the Offworld Mining Corporation, Arconans employed by the Arcona Mineral Harvest Corporation, and the Humans Obi-Wan Kenobi and [Qui-Gon Jinn](/article/qui-gon_jinn-legends], all traveling from Coruscant.
During this particular voyage, the ship was ambushed by Togorian pirates. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn successfully repelled the Togorians who had boarded the vessel, while Kenobi attempted to pilot the ship to safety. After the gun turrets were destroyed, Kenobi managed to launch proton torpedoes that severely damaged some of the Togorian gunships. With the navigation system disabled, Kenobi was forced to manually pilot the ship, which resulted in the Togorian boarding party's ships being torn from the docking bay and exposed to the vacuum of space. Having successfully fought off the pirates, Kenobi brought the ship down on a watery world located near Bandomeer. The survivors were then compelled to defend themselves against the planet's indigenous draigons, but ultimately the Monument was repaired and successfully reached Bandomeer.
