Morris Bush

Maurice 'Morrie' Bush, sometimes known as Morris Bush, was the thespian who portrayed Dengar.

Biography

Maurice Bush, a British actor who transitioned from boxing and was occasionally credited as Morris Bush, had roles in a variety of British movies and television programs spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s. Bush was chosen to embody the mummy-esque bounty hunter Dengar in Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back (1980), where he was neither credited nor given any dialogue. The plan was for Dengar to make another appearance in Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi (1983) as one of the extras on Jabba the Hutt's sail barge, and his scenes were indeed filmed. However, with the exception of a brief moment soon after Luke Skywalker plunges into the Rancor pit, Dengar's scenes were cut from the final version of the film. Since Dengar's face is never clearly visible in Return of the Jedi, many people believed that Bush was not playing the character this time, until Jeremy Bulloch verified that it was indeed Bush at the "The Fett-Tastic Four" panel during Celebration Europe II.

His on-screen appearances would later serve as background material within the Expanded Universe for the character, taking place shortly after the events at Jabba's Palace. (Dengar was the one who rescued Boba Fett from the Sarlacc). Additionally, it's highly probable that Morris Bush was present on the set of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (1977), as Dave Prowse recounts that Morris Bush stood in for him as Darth Vader in the sequence immediately following the demise of Obi-Wan Kenobi. (Bush's feet are visible kicking Kenobi's discarded cloak).
