Needan system

The Needan system, situated in Wild Space, was the location of the planet Needan. This planet served as the original homeworld for the sentient Geelan species. A comet once struck the planet, drastically chilling its climate and causing the extinction of most lifeforms. Subsequently, the Geelans broadcast distress signals into space, prompting the arrival of an Arcona medical starship. This encounter marked their first contact with an alien species, which then led to the Geelan spreading out into the broader galaxy.

Description

Located within Wild Space was the Needan system, a star system that was nearing its end. It was comprised of a single star which was orbited by the terrestrial planet Needan, a world teeming with life. Needan was the original homeworld of the sentient Geelan species. A comet also existed within the system at one point.

History

The planet Needan, which is located in the Needan system, was the place where the Geelan species began.

Needan was struck by a passing comet at some point in its history. The impact of the collision forced the planet into a larger orbit, moving it further away from its sun at a rapid pace. This resulted in a swift and permanent onset of cold and winter-like conditions on Needan, leading to the extinction of the vast majority of species inhabiting the planet.

Eventually, Geelan scientists started transmitting distress signals into the vastness of space. At some point around the time of the Galactic Civil War, these signals were picked up by an Arcona crewed medical starship. The crew then followed the signals to their source, which led them to Needan. This visit from offworlders allowed the Geelan to learn about and implement galactic technologies. The fact that their home planet was dying caused many Geelan to leave and explore the larger galaxy.

Behind the scenes

The Needan system was initially mentioned, though not directly, in "Zirtran's Anchor," an article for a roleplaying game authored by Anthony P. Russo. It was published by West End Games in the February 1995 fifth issue of their Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine. The 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas, written by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry, officially named the system and placed it in grid square I-20.
