Unidentified comet

A comet, in its celestial journey, once struck Needan, which is a planet orbiting a solitary star within the perishing Needan system found in Wild Space. This impact propelled Needan into a significantly expanded orbital path, swiftly moving it away from its sun.

The resulting, and permanent cold and winter-like conditions brought about the demise of most species on the planet. Previously, this world boasted vast oceans teeming with life, alongside jungles covering its landmass. The sentient Geelan inhabitants of Needan managed to survive this catastrophe by constructing and seeking refuge within dome-like habitats. However, upon realizing that the fuel resources upon which their civilization depended were rapidly diminishing, the species' scientists initiated the transmission of distress signals into outer space. This act eventually led to initial contact with the broader galactic community sometime around the time of the Galactic Civil War, followed by the subsequent emigration of many Geelan away from their doomed homeworld.

Behind the scenes

The comet received its initial mention within the "Alien Encounters" segment of the May 1997 thirteenth issue of Star Wars Adventure Journal magazine, published by West End Games. Brian Smithson was the author of this segment. The reference work The Essential Atlas, published in 2009, situated the Needan system, and consequently the comet, within grid square I-20.
