Nelson Hall, a former employee of ILM, was one of the three "official" individuals who operated R2-D2. The company Nelhal Industries was named in his honor. Besides his contributions to Star Wars, Hall also contributed to the miniatures and special effects seen in Lucasfilm's film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
Hall makes several brief appearances in the Special Edition version of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. He and Don Bies are digitally replicated as numerous stormtroopers and Imperial officers on the Death Star, specifically in the scene where Han Solo encounters a large number of Imperials within a hangar bay. Later, Hall is seen as a Rebel technician walking in front of Luke Skywalker, Biggs Darklighter, and Garven Dreis on Yavin 4. This addition was implemented to conceal a segment of the scene that was cut, where Dreis mentions knowing Luke's father. Hall himself described his role in this particular sequence as a "human wipe."
