ORO Mining Station LM0228

ORO Mining Station LM0228, a fully automated mining facility, was established by the Outer Rim Oreworks corporation on the planet Lamaredd within the LM0228 system. Initially, it was overseen by the ORO Administrator, specifically Hugo Bartyn. However, after centuries of minimal oversight, the Menahuun, a native sentient species, secretly infiltrated the mine. They referred to the Station as Hua'Bal in their Menahu language and used it as a staging ground for a planned assault against Bartyn's descendants.

History

Approximately five centuries prior to the Battle of Naboo, Hugo Bartyn, acting as an agent for Outer Rim Oreworks, laid claim to the planet Lamaredd in the LM0228 system, also known as the Lamaro system, with the intention of extracting its mineral wealth. ORO appointed Bartyn as the Administrator responsible for their local operations and deployed engineers and construction droids to build their primary mining complex, which would become known as ORO Mining Station LM0228. Living quarters were constructed, along with a network of waste disposal pipes that ultimately discharged refuse into the northwestern ocean. Subsequently, ORO provided Bartyn with a contingent of mining droids to excavate the planetary crust.

During the construction phase, Hugo Bartyn and his associates engaged in the hunting of the indigenous sentient species, the Menahuun, to the point where they were presumed extinct. However, the Menahuun had instead retreated to a remote northwestern region of the planet to evade the attacks and plot their revenge. During his campaign, Bartyn established his central headquarters within the Mining Station's underground command center. Mistakenly believing that he had eradicated the species, Bartyn permanently sealed the command center doors to prevent any scavenging.

Following this, Bartyn utilized the droids to establish his own settlement, Bartyn's Landing, in close proximity to the mine. This settlement was intended to evolve into a coastal fishing village, independent of the mining operations. Simultaneously, Bartyn effectively managed his resources, enabling ORO Mining Station LM0228 to generate profits at an unprecedented rate, even though Bartyn retained a portion of the mine's earnings for himself. Bartyn served as the Administrator for the duration of his life, and his position was inherited by his successors for the next five centuries. One of them, around 229 BBY, secretly constructed a tunnel connecting the Bartyn mansion to the Mining Station, and installed a MMV security droid to safeguard it. Over these centuries, the Bartyn family gained ownership of the majority of the planet's property, primarily due to ORO's continued support, which was contingent on ORO's ongoing receipt of profits from the mine.

ORO's standard procedure involved periodic inspections of the mines; however, the Bartyns had successfully bribed several ORO officials to eliminate this requirement. Consequently, the mine was entirely automated with droids, eliminating the need for any organic personnel to enter.

Around 194 BBY, the Menahuun migrated southward once more, as their new territory had become uninhabitable. While traversing the mountains, they inadvertently discovered a concealed entrance to the mine and gained access to the Mining Station's interior. They also observed that the mining droids were preoccupied with their tasks and paid no attention to the newcomers. Subsequently, the Menahuun transformed the mine into their new settlement, naming it "Hua'Bal," which translates to "Hidden Glory" in Menahu. They also devoted their time to studying the alien technology.

Around 36 BBY, Administrator Guther Bartyn, a descendant of Hugo, ventured near the mines while hunting in the mountains. The mine's inhabitants responded by firing upon him with laser defenses. Bartyn managed to escape and mistakenly concluded that a group of outlaws was concealing themselves within the mine.

Around 29 BBY, the Menahuun revealed their presence to the residents of Bartyn's Landing, leading to a period of relative peace. Alarmed by this development, Guther Bartyn sealed the secret mine connecting the Mining Station to his residence.

Layout

The Mine featured three entry points, situated around a former holotheater, in addition to an underwater passage leading to the sea and several water streams too narrow for a Human to traverse. The control platform provided a comprehensive view of the entire mine, including a mining laser.

Several areas existed that were not originally intended for mining purposes, such as a fighting pit, a weapons testing range, a warehouse (containing insufficient food supplies during the Menahuun's occupation), and a greenhouse. The Menahuun established several residential zones where they constructed huts, and repurposed storage areas into dungeons. Furthermore, they prohibited access to the lower levels of the mine.

The reactor core control room regulated the energy supply for the entire mine, but it was an extremely hazardous area, particularly under turbulent conditions.

Behind the scenes

ORO Mining Station LM0228 was conceived by writer Cory J. Herndon and was featured within the article Bartyn's Landing and in the role-playing adventure Reckonings, both of which were published in the magazine Star Wars Gamer #7 (2001).

Alternate ending

The article operates under the assumption that the player characters in Reckonings attain the most favorable outcome. However, in the event of their failure, the adventure presents an alternative storyline that unfolds during an open conflict between the Menahuun and the inhabitants of Bartyn's Landing. In this scenario, the Menahuun from Hua'Bal conduct repeated raids on Bartyn's Landing, prompting Guther Bartyn to request corporate shock troops from ORO to eliminate Hua'Bal.
