A type of creature was the otter. Specifically, the Klepthian rock otter was indigenous to the Klepthia system within the Expansion Region's Tynna sector. These rock otters would vigorously grind the shells of basalt clams while eating them.
The Tynnans, a sentient, aquatic, bipedal species from the planet Tynna, which is also found in the Tynna sector, shared a resemblance with otters. Likewise, the Selonians, fur-covered sentients from the Core Worlds planet Selonia, and the flying bulfusi from the Core planet Corulag also looked like otters. The razort, an otter-like creature, was native to the planet Sedri.
Furthermore, the Sessehshellah, a fur-bearing sentient species hailing from the planet Shaymore in the Immerian Outback sector of the Expansion Region, possessed the characteristics of large river otters.
The first mention of otters occurred in "Rings of Bright Water," an adventure seed for a roleplaying game that was part of the 1987 first edition rulebook for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game by West End Games. Ken Rolston was the author of this adventure idea. In the real world, otters are aquatic mammals covered in fur that consume fish and clams.
