The original rule set for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, first published by West End Games in October of 1987, provides players and gamemasters with rules and guidelines. It also includes character templates, advice for crafting adventures, and an example adventure titled "Rebel Breakout." Fantasy Flight Games subsequently re-released this book, along with The Star Wars Sourcebook, as part of Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game 30th Anniversary Edition, meticulously recreating it as an exact duplicate of the initial release.

Within the book's initial pages, the opening crawl identifies Palpatine as the "Galactic Republic's President." Later, this designation would evolve into the Supreme Chancellor.
The "No Job is Over This Little Guy's Head" section, printed on glossed paper, offers in-universe details regarding the R2 unit, suggesting that the R2 unit, and thus R2-D2, was a recent development during the Galactic Civil War. However, The Phantom Menace, released twelve years afterwards but taking place decades before the original trilogy, features R2-D2 not only present but also playing a pivotal role.
The events of "Rebel Breakout" were subsequently adapted into a webstrip titled Rookies: No Turning Back. Pablo Hidalgo wrote and illustrated the strip, which was published on Hyperspace: The Official Star Wars Fan Club, a section of the official Star Wars website in 2006.
