Painting of Duchess Satine Kryze
The portrait depicting Duchess Satine Kryze was a cubist representation, in the Mandalorian style, of Mandalore's Duchess and leader, Satine Kryze. During the period of the Clone Wars, this painting was displayed within the Sundari Royal Palace; it was later taken by Maul, the former Sith Lord who once led Mandalore, to his personal lair located on his homeworld of Dathomir. Over time, specifically since its display in the Royal Palace, the painting suffered damage, evidenced by scratches across Kryze's eyes and neck. Maul incorporated the damaged painting into a shrine dedicated to Kryze, complete with lit candles. The ancient Mandalorian weapon, the Darksaber, was positioned directly beneath the painting. In the year 2 BBY, when Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger was brought by Maul to his lair in an attempt to sway him toward the dark side, Bridger noticed and carefully examined the shrine, focusing on the painting.
Behind the scenes
The painting of Duchess Satine Kryze initially appeared in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series, specifically in "The Mandalore Plot," which was the twelfth episode of its second season. This episode was originally broadcast on January 29, 2010. Its identification was first made in the episode guide relating to "Visions and Voices," the eleventh episode of the third season of Star Wars Rebels, which was released after the episode's original airing on December 10, 2016. For the scene in "Visions and Voices" where Bridger observes the painting, Kevin Kiner, the composer, included a piano refrain derived from Duchess Satine's theme.
