The Penladen detention camp, situated in the Penladen Hills, represented one of the several prison facilities established by the Trade Federation during the Invasion of Naboo in 32 BBY. Following the raid on Theed, Captain Quarsh Panaka tasked six Palace Guards from the Royal Naboo Security Forces with the mission to free those imprisoned at the camp. The Naboo forces launched an attack, disabling the camp's generator, while the imprisoned citizens assisted the guards by using their bare hands to dismantle the battle droids.
Pars Varqom, a former Palace Guard, later remembered the camp as a place of "terrible" conditions, explaining that the battle droids, designed solely for combat, lacked the programming for providing care, which resulted in widespread illness and starvation. Varqom likened the inmates' plight to that of confined shaaks.
Jason Fry, the author of The Essential Guide to Warfare, ultimately decided to omit any reference to the Penladen detention camp from the book's final version. The camp was subsequently integrated into canon through a blog post on StarWars.com titled Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare: Author's Cut, Part 6 — Showdown at Naboo.
