Permafrost crystal
Rare lightsaber crystals known as permafrost crystals were discovered on the planet of Hoth. If used inside a lightsaber, the blade would glow with an icy blue hue. During the time of the Galactic Civil War, the settlement of Aurilia on the world Dathomir possessed a single permafrost crystal.
Properties
These permafrost crystals exhibited a deep, icy blue shade; this color was imparted to the blade of any lightsaber that incorporated them. If a Force-sensitive individual attuned one of these crystals for usage in a lightsaber, it transformed into a focusing crystal that could only be utilized in lightsabers built by that specific person.
History
Hoth was the only known location where permafrost crystals originated, although their exact creation remained a mystery. At some point during the Galactic Civil War, one of these crystals came into the ownership of the city of Aurilia located on the planet Dathomir. A logistics officer within the settlement gifted one to a traveler who played a key role in the Battle of Hoth fought between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
Behind the scenes
The permafrost crystal is a specialized lightsaber crystal featured in the 2003 MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided, which was developed by Sony Online Entertainment. It was introduced into the game on November 20, 2008. Similar to all blue crystals present in the game, permafrost causes the lightsaber of the player character to inflict additional cold damage upon its use. The ambiguity surrounding its history stems from the fact that, while characters can participate in the Battle of Hoth within the game, they have the option to fight for either the Empire or the Rebel Alliance. They can then acquire the crystal in exchange for fifty "Echo Base Tokens of Heroism," a resource that player characters can obtain a maximum of nine of for each perfect completion of the battle. Furthermore, while characters have the ability to take part in the Battle of Hoth, which canonically occurs in 3 ABY, the game's timeline of approximately 1.5 ABY is not advanced to coincide with the battle's occurrence. The crystal also makes an appearance as an "Item" card in The Nightsister's Revenge expansion for the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game.
