Pijal varactyls represented a subspecies within the reptavian family, specifically the varactyls. The initial varactyl population was brought over to Pijal from Utapau by the Iltan clan to gain a competitive advantage in the Grand Hunt. Through selective breeding, they evolved into the distinct, agile, and crimson-feathered Pijal varactyls. During his time on Pijal, Obi-Wan Kenobi developed a connection with one of these varactyls, ultimately riding it in the Grand Hunt.
