The Raid at Bakura, alternatively known as the First Battle of Bakura, unfolded in 3 ABY. During this time, the Rebel Alliance discovered that the Galactic Empire was holding a group of scientists captured from Hoth within an Imperial detention center in orbit around Bakura.
Following the setback of the Battle of Hoth in 3 ABY, the Alliance to Restore the Republic began the process of restoring its operational capabilities. The skilled pilots of Rogue Squadron, known as aces, were dispatched to Bakura with the mission of rescuing the captured scientists.
Upon the squadron's arrival, they found three Imperial Dropship Transports already in the process of departing the prison facility with the scientists onboard.
Wedge Antilles, the Rogue Leader, utilized his B-wing starfighter's ion cannon to disable one of the escaping Imperial transports carrying a group of scientists. A GR-75 medium transport then linked up with the disabled Imperial vessel and extracted the prisoners. Numerous TIE fighters, which were patrolling the vicinity, responded to the battle alert and rapidly converged on the location.
After successfully completing the docking procedure, the initial Rebel transport accelerated away from the conflict zone, aiming to make a safe jump into hyperspace. Although several TIE fighters pursued them, Antilles successfully repelled the attackers. Concurrently, a second rescue transport was approaching. Antilles proceeded to disable another dropship transport to facilitate the recovery of the remaining prisoners.
Following the disabling of the third dropship transport, a TIE Fighter shot down Derek Klivian's X-wing, causing him to crash land on the planet's surface. Antilles docked with the prison in order to commandeer a TIE Bomber for the purpose of extracting him, as the rescue craft had space for only one person. Antilles was forced to navigate through the intense barrage of heavy missile batteries and turrets positioned across the surface of Bakura. Employing his TIE bomber's concussion missiles, he successfully breached the defenses and rescued Hobbie.
Prior to retrieving Hobbie, Wedge acquired some advanced proton bombs from a domed tower that he destroyed.
Upon returning to orbit, Antilles observed a significant amount of debris scattered throughout the area. Crix Madine informed him that an Imperial escort carrier had absconded with a group of scientists, destroyed one of the transports and several Rebel starfighters, and was apparently en route to Geonosis, based on its communication logs.
Determined to save the scientists, Rogue Squadron would spearhead an assault force to Geonosis. In parallel, Emperor Palpatine informed Vader that the Rebels were still unaware of the full extent of their plans, hinting that the individual responsible was one of their own.
The Rebels eventually located the abductor's location on Geonosis through a transmission, and immediately set out to rescue the scientists. Regrettably, the lead proved to be a trap, compelling the remaining Rebel transports to evacuate without rescuing the scientists.
The Raid at Bakura level featured in the 2003 video game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike was designed primarily to give players the freedom to make their own choices, a design philosophy that also necessitated the use of script modulators to reduce the difficulty. The space station's design was loosely based on concepts derived from various sci-fi films, and was then adapted to align more closely with the Star Wars aesthetic.
Flying the TIE bomber in the mission is a mini-game unlocked upon reaching silver medal status. Destroying the missile launchers within a certain time limit is necessary to unlock the TIE Bomber as a flyable craft. Alternatively, if the player receives bronze level status, an FMV will play showing arrival of the Imperial Escort carrier and the re-capture of the scientists and the destruction of the Rebel Transport. It was largely created as a reward for the player for putting up with the difficulties of choosing their own path in the mission. This article assumes the full mission was achieved.
Procuring the upgrade will fulfill the bonus objective for the mission.
