The ultimate, perfect state for the Chiss was known as the Red Flame. It stood for the very best in bravery, strategic thinking, and self-control. Chiss members of the armed forces, for instance Shawnkyr Nuruodo, a First Lieutenant, sported red piping on their flight suits as a constant reminder of the Red Flame's virtues, which they should strive for, even if complete attainment wasn't guaranteed.
The short story Red Sky, Blue Flame by Elaine Cunningham, first introduced the Red Flame in 2001. It appeared in the seventh edition of the Star Wars Gamer magazine. In Star Wars: The Old Republic, during the "Assault on the Starbreeze" mission, a female Chiss Imperial Agent character on the planet Hoth can engage in flirtatious dialogue with the Aristocra [Saganu]. Saganu will then comment that the player character is the embodiment of the Red Flame.
