A battle droid (also known under the names war droid, combat droid, battle bot, or killer droid) described any droid specifically engineered for use in warfare.
Combat-focused droids were relatively uncommon and were actually against the law within the Galactic Republic.
Battle droids existed in a wide array of models. Their existence stretches back millennia prior to the Galactic Republic, with the Rakatan guardian droids along with the war-robots utilized by Xim the Despot being among the earliest documented examples.
The Eternal Empire employed battle droids referred to as Skytroopers as their primary ground forces.
The most recognizable battle droids are largely those deployed by the Confederacy of Independent Systems throughout the Clone Wars.
As the Clone Wars concluded, the Sith Lord Darth Vader deactivated the majority of the Separatist Droid Army by turning off the Master control signal. Following this event, battle droids became exceedingly scarce.
A common attribute shared by the majority of battle droids was their limited cognitive ability. They were designed to execute commands, with little capacity for independent thought, although they often exhibited distinct personalities. However, certain battle droids possessed superior intelligence; these more advanced droids were considerably more expensive to manufacture due to their sophisticated processing units, resulting in smaller production numbers. Examples include the BX-series droid commando, the IG-100 MagnaGuard, and, excluding the initial iterations, the Droideka.
