Rolk-mangir, which translates to "horned death" from Yinchorri, were top-tier predators indigenous to the planet of Yinchorr. Reaching heights of four meters and possessing incredibly durable hides, rolk-mangir were also remarkably swift and intelligent. They organized themselves into social groups defined by a strict hierarchy based on physical dominance. Despite a period when training these beasts as guardians was a trend among Imperial Moffs and other dignitaries, a string of brutal events resulted in the prohibition of private rolk-mangir ownership across much of the galaxy.
Hailing from the deserts of Yinchorr, the rolk-mangir were pack hunters, recognized as one of the most lethal species on the planet. Standing at four meters in height, they were characterized by brown hides capable of withstanding point-blank blaster fire, heavily muscled necks, and flat faces adorned with six sharp horns. These horns served both as tools for impaling prey and as weapons in mating season duels. Their immense physical power was complemented by surprising agility and intelligence, enabling them to hunt stealthily despite their considerable size. This hunting prowess was further enhanced by exceptional low-light vision and a highly developed sense of smell, allowing them to detect prey from up to 20 meters using scent alone.
Rolk-mangir lived in loosely organized packs typically consisting of four to sixteen individuals. These packs were structured around a dominance hierarchy determined by strength, and internal duels were a common occurrence. While these conflicts rarely led to serious injury or death, the losers were often banished from the pack temporarily. These exiled rolk-mangir were known to be particularly dangerous, exhibiting increased aggression and rage. Although trainable as guard animals, rolk-mangir tended to be loyal only to their trainers and were prone to attacking bystanders or escaping if their trainer lost control. Typically nocturnal hunters, they could be provoked into attack by loud noises even during the day. While they usually moved on all fours, they were known to rear up on their hind legs during combat to gain leverage when impaling opponents with their horns.
Celebrated as apex predators on their native world, the rolk-mangir's reputation—"horned death" in Yinchorri—extended well beyond Yinchorr. Skulls from these creatures became highly prized trophies among big-game hunters. Numerous specimens were exported to hunting preserves in the Core and the Corporate Sector, and during the Imperial Period, it became fashionable for Moffs and high-ranking Imperials to train young rolk-mangir as guard animals. However, following a series of violent incidents, owning rolk-mangir was outlawed on most inhabited planets, although a black market for rolk-mangir cubs persisted. In 4 ABY, Rebel leader Leia Organa was forced to evade a pack of ravenous rolk-mangir during a diplomatic mission to Yinchorr, with the assistance of an Alderaanian stormtrooper.
The rolk-mangir made their debut in Star Wars 86, authored by Randy Stradley, illustrated by Bob McLeod, and published in 1984. While their appearance in the comic was brief, substantial background information about the rolk-mangir was later provided in the 2001 Star Wars Roleplaying Game supplement Alien Anthology.
