Skellig Michael

The Star Wars sequel trilogy included Skellig Michael as a filming location. Skellig Michael, or Sceilg Mhichíl as it's known in the Irish language, is an island belonging to the Republic of Ireland. Within the sequel trilogy, this island served as the location for the Temple Island on the planet Ahch-To. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Skellig Michael has a smaller neighboring island called Little Skellig. The island's abundant seabird population, notably puffins, provided inspiration for the creation of the porg species. Furthermore, the island's geographical characteristics and historical significance, especially its well-preserved early medieval Christian monastery, were prominently showcased in Rian Johnson's 2017 movie, Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi.

The initial appearance of the island within the Star Wars universe was at the conclusion of the 2015 film, Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, which was directed by J.J. Abrams. Following its role in The Last Jedi, it also made a brief appearance in Abrams' 2019 movie, Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.
