Skinker

On the planet Feriae Junction, a salvage yard was owned by a Human male named Skinker. In 0 ABY, Skinker's path crossed with that of Beilert Valance, a well-known bounty hunter. Skinker, who was handsomely compensated by Valance, acquired salvaged automatons for the bounty hunter to obliterate, due to Valance's deep seated hatred of droids. When Luke Skywalker, the Rebel hero Valance was obsessively pursuing, made an appearance at Skinker's yard, Skinker promptly alerted Valance. Unfortunately for Skinker, he was caught in the resulting crossfire and met his demise.

Biography

Beilert Valance and Skinker.

During the Galactic Civil War, Skinker, a male Human, ran a salvage yard located on Feriae Junction, a world in the Outer Rim. Around 0 ABY, Skinker entered into an agreement with Beilert Valance, a former Imperial bounty hunter who spent several weeks operating on Feriae Junction. Valance, driven by an intense dislike for droids and fixated on finding an unnamed "farmboy" instrumental in the Rebel triumph at the Battle of Yavin, regularly paid Skinker to procure droids from scavenger ships for destruction. He specifically requested 3PO or R2-series units, mirroring those used by his target. Skinker, though indifferent to droids, obliged Valance, as the bounty hunter paid fair market value for the rebuilt droids, thus maintaining their arrangement.

Meanwhile, Skinker remained vigilant for the Rebel that Valance was so determined to capture. The hunter suspected his target might transit through Feriae Junction due to the Imperial blockade of the Yavin system. Eventually, Luke Skywalker, the young Rebel, arrived at Skinker's salvage yard seeking components to fix his damaged R2 unit. Skinker immediately recognized Skywalker, who was accompanied by his 3PO protocol droid, and instructed Polyp, one of his employees, to inform Valance. Polyp relayed the message and returned to Skinker, but their persistent whispering aroused Skywalker's suspicion. Skywalker drew a blaster, disrupting Valance's ambush attempt. Skywalker managed to trap Valance behind a magnetically sealed door, but the bounty hunter, concealing his cyborg enhancements, blasted through it with his arm-mounted laser cannon, resulting in the deaths of both Skinker and Polyp.

Personality and traits

Skinker, whose business centered on repairing and selling salvaged droids, harbored no particular animosity toward mechanical beings, viewing them as integral to modern life. Although he considered Valance's droid destruction wasteful, Skinker willingly participated in their agreement as long as the hunter continued to pay him well. Skinker's loyalty prompted him to quickly notify Valance upon Luke Skywalker's arrival at his salvage yard, an action that ultimately led to his demise.

Behind the scenes

Skinker's initial appearance was in Star Wars (1977) 27, penned by Archie Goodwin and released in 1979. His character was illustrated by Carmine Infantino.
