Spider sponges, sometimes written as spider-sponges, constituted a kind of plant life that naturally occurred on the planet of Geonosis. In the Geonosian droid factories during 22 BBY, nests of spider-sponges made their homes within the air vent tunnel connecting the power generator center and the fusion reactor. These organisms thrived by consuming the poisonous waste gases emitted by the manufacturing facility.
Within the current Star Wars canon, spider-sponges received a mention in the 2016 reference work titled Star Wars: Complete Locations. The information regarding spider-sponges originated from the 2003 Star Wars Legends book Inside the Worlds of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, penned by Simon Beecroft and Curtis Saxton, which represented the initial appearance of these creatures.
