Star Wars: Droid Factory (toy line)

title: Star Wars: Droid Factory

Star Wars: Droid Factory, initially part of Hasbro's The Legacy Collection, debuted in 2008. It was then brought back in 2012 as a standalone toy line, exclusively available at Disney Parks.

Background

The original Droid Factory concept revolved around a "Build-A-Droid" system. Each action figure included a component that, when combined with others, allowed for the construction of a unique astromech or protocol droid. This idea was first introduced with Wal-Mart exclusive two-packs, where collecting all six packs' components allowed one to assemble C-3PX. A later 2009 release allowed for the construction of a Phase III Dark Trooper. Hasbro had plans for another Droid Factory series, but it was initially cancelled. However, those previously unreleased figures were eventually made available in an Amazon-exclusive set in 2013, and another set at retail in 2015. These sets contained parts to build TC-70.

In 2012, Disney revitalized the concept within their theme parks. This iteration allowed visitors to create personalized astromech droid action figures by selecting from a wide assortment of interchangeable parts, including Disney-themed headwear. This line was distinct from The Legacy Collection, with no Hasbro branding on the packaging. The initial 2012 products featured the Star Tours logo, which was absent from subsequent releases. Many characters already established in Star Wars lore could be assembled using the available parts. The launch coincided with the opening of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue during Star Wars Weekends, and a new selection of parts was introduced later in 2012 at Celebration VI. Another significant parts collection was unveiled at Celebration Anaheim in 2015. At the Star Wars Celebration held in Orlando, Florida in 2017, a new series of Build-A-Droid protocol droids was launched.

Additionally, the line featured pre-assembled exclusive figures, including astromech droids themed around holidays and events. From 2015 to 2024, four-figure sets based on current Star Wars films and television shows were released. Following the opening of Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in 2019, the toy line sold at Droid Depot stores included certain figures and sets that also carried the "Droid Factory" designation.

Continuity

A notable aspect of the original Droid Factory toys was the inclusion of several Legends droids and characters, marking their debut as action figures.
