Star Wars: Droids (toy line)

The Star Wars: Droids 1985 toy series by Kenner was a tie-in to the Star Wars: Droids animated show, which was broadcasted on ABC between 1985 and 1986. Before the cartoon's end, Kenner's Droids range included twelve characters and three vehicles from the animated program.

Development

Kenner introduced its Star Wars: Droids toy collection to coincide with the Star Wars: Droids animated television show, which premiered on ABC during 1985. The cartoon centered around the early escapades of the droid pair C-3PO and R2-D2 preceding the events of the Star Wars original trilogy.

The Droids toy line featured twelve action figures and three vehicles that appeared in the animated series. The 1986 Kenner catalog showed a preview of nine additional figures for the toy line's second wave, but these were never released due to the cartoon's cancellation. The toys were available for purchase concurrently with the Ewoks toy line, which was also based on an animated series, and The Power of the Force line, which continued Kenner's movie-based toys.

Reception

Droids action figures and unreleased prototypes

The Droids toy line from Kenner did not achieve the same sales success as their Star Wars: Ewoks line, which was another toy collection from 1985 connected to a related animated series.

Legacy

One of the prototype figures initially planned for the unreleased second series of Kenner's Droids toy line was the character Vlix. While American collectors had known about the prototype figures for many years, fans discovered in the early 1990s that the Vlix character had actually been manufactured and released in Brazil by the Glasslite company. According to the fan site The Star Wars Collectors Archive, this Vlix figure is the rarest Star Wars figure to be commercially available, with estimates suggesting that fewer than a dozen are currently held within American collections.

Table of action figures

The table presented below uses the information provided on the cards that accompanied each action figure upon its initial release. Following the initial release of an action figure, modifications could be made to the packaging, the action figure's design, and the action figure's name. The list is not solely defined by any single attribute (name, design, or product number); rather, the combination of all attributes collectively defines the list.
