Development

Following his work on 2019's Star Wars: The Secrets of the Jedi, a reference book focusing on the Jedi, Marc Sumerak was commissioned by Insight Editions to create a similar book centered around the Sith. Having previously adopted Luke Skywalker's perspective for Secrets of the Jedi, Sumerak chose to write Secrets of the Sith from the viewpoint of Emperor Palpatine. Sumerak collaborated with his editor Chris Prince to effectively portray the Emperor's transformation from a composed public figure during his days as a politician into the shrewd strategist and tyrant he later became as Emperor, while also capturing the Emperor's larger-than-life personality. The process of chronicling character biographies, reflecting on the essence of the Force, and delving into historical events involved immersing themselves in Star Wars lore and reinterpreting these events through Palpatine's unique perspective, a character deeply rooted in the beliefs of the dark side of the Force, allowing the reader to revisit and re-analyze all existing media with Palpatine's motivations in mind, paying close attention to his actions and influence. In his role as illustrator, Sergio Gómez Silván aimed to evoke a sense of myth, similar to his work on Secrets of the Jedi, by infusing the galaxy's technology with elements reminiscent of ancient times, such as medieval knights and saints, Art Nouveau, and Japanese parchments inspired by Feudal Japan. Silván typically began his creative process with the lightsabers, using them as a foundation for the image's color scheme. When illustrating Darth Vader in particular, Gómez sought to depict Anakin Skywalker's evolution, tracing his journey from the yellowish hues of Tatooine's desert, where he first encountered Obi-Wan Kenobi, through the reddish core of the Jedi Temple, the site of his murders of the Jedi younglings, and finally to the orange flames of Mustafar, signifying the completion of Darth Vader's transformation. Gómez juxtaposed this progression with the lightsaber's blue blade to emphasize Obi-Wan's role as Anakin's connection to the light side of the Force, employing a diverse color palette to achieve this effect.
