Star Wars Year by Year: A Visual Chronicle builds upon the original 2010 version by integrating 8 additional pages into the "Clone Wars & Beyond" section, with content contributed by Pablo Hidalgo. The 2010 chapter, originally spanning four pages, was reworked to accommodate two more. This revision led to the removal of several sections from the updated edition, including the Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound Academy Award nominations for Star Trek, Avatar and Up, the premiere of Joe Johnston's movie The Wolfman, the release of a fresh image of Mimas (referred to as the "Death Star" moon) by the Cassini space probe, the conclusion of The Clone Wars: Season Two which focused on Boba Fett, the Jedi-Con event hosted by the Official German Star Wars Fan Club, the debut of Iron Man 2, the Norman Rockwell exhibition at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the publication of Star Wars Art: Visions, the commencement of The Clone Wars: Season Three, and the release of The Sounds of Star Wars. Furthermore, the sections regarding Star Wars: Frames and the Star Tours enhancement to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue were shifted to the 2011 chapter. Additionally, new chapters were created for both 2011 and 2012, adding four and two pages respectively.
