The Storini Crystal Deceiver was a fabricated being, the brainchild of Ton Phanan, Garik Loran, and Kell Tainer, conceived as retribution for the incessant practical jokes perpetrated by their squadron mate, Eurrsk Thri'ag. This act of revenge was triggered by Thri'ag's surreptitious placement of a Storini glass prowler within the cockpit of Loran's X-Wing, with the intention of startling him during flight.
Unbeknownst to Thri'ag, Phanan had also adopted a glass prowler as a companion during the very same mission in which Thri'ag acquired his. Loran, serving as Phanan's wingman, possessed familiarity with the insect. Consequently, when the creature began crawling on him during flight, he initially mistook it for Ton's pet. Following the mission, they discerned that it was not and concluded that the Bothan slicer must be the practical joker who had been targeting the squadron, given his unique ability to acquire access codes to other members' crafts.
To ensure the prank's credibility, Loran fabricated a bogus entry in the Night Caller's encyclopedia entries concerning the Crystal Deceiver. In it, he described it as a perilous predator equipped with venomous fangs, bearing a striking resemblance to the harmless glass prowler. Tainer constructed a compact device capable of producing a scratching sound akin to that made by the glass prowler, and this was placed in Thri'ag's living quarters as he slept. After searching around in an attempt to locate the insect, Thri'ag stumbled upon the device and passed out from fright.
