Sturm, paired with Drang, was one of the two pet vornskrs owned by Talon Karrde.
The encounter between Karrde and Sturm occurred when the vornskr launched an assault on him. In an act of self-preservation, the smuggler discharged his weapon, severing its tail, which both wounded and disoriented the creature, thereby halting its offensive. Karrde provided care to restore it to health, and a mutual fondness developed between them. A contributing factor was that vornskrs without tails exhibit reduced predatory instincts compared to their untamed brethren; consequently, Sturm was satisfied with Karrde providing nourishment.
Karrde regarded Sturm's character as exhibiting "somewhat greater detachment" than that of Drang.
Circa 9 ABY, Karrde transported them to Mount Tantiss, anticipating that their Force-sensitive tracking abilities would enable them to find Mara Jade and Luke Skywalker.
The name, alongside Drang, alluded to Sturm und Drang, a German literary movement from the 18th century that underscored the individual's battles against society. Timothy Zahn, the author, believed this theme would resonate with Karrde, whom he envisioned as an educated individual with a penchant for wordplay.
