Patrol ship

Patrol ships, also referred to as patrol craft, system patrol craft or patrol vessels, were designed as combat warships. Their operational area was typically within a single star system, where they functioned as both customs enforcement and defensive sentinels. Commonly launched from planetary bases or carriers, they essentially acted as the sublight-capable, defense-focused counterpart to fast attack craft.

Characteristics

During the era of the Galactic Empire, system patrol craft were classified as capital ships lacking hyperdrives. Their dimensions ranged from 100 to 250 meters in length, and they were operated by crews of four to twenty individuals. A prime illustration of this class was the IPV-1, manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems. These ships were fast and highly maneuverable, built primarily to pursue and subdue fleeing vessels, particularly smugglers, before they could engage their lightspeed drives. Their considerable sublight speed also allowed them to engage incoming enemy forces upon their arrival in the defended star system. In such engagements, they could engage smaller capital ships, up to the size of frigates and corvettes, in skirmishes. However, their agility was insufficient for dogfighting with starfighters, and their firepower was inadequate to confront cruisers.

History

However, not every vessel utilized as a system patrol craft adhered to these standardized specifications. Sometimes, older, larger ships were employed by Imperial commanders when modern patrol craft were unavailable. Furthermore, by the time of the New Republic, the Corellians had engineered the Mynock-class assault boat. This vessel featured heavier armaments and a larger contingent of troops, but possessed a slower and smaller hull—and crucially, included a hyperdrive. This made it better suited for ground assaults and boarding operations than the traditional role of interception.
