Bezzem, an alien, engages in a conversation with Tem Chesko, a man of ninety years. Chesko gestures towards his spacecraft visible through the cantina's window, explaining to Bezzem that he arrived that very morning following a seventy-one-year-long journey transporting syntonium crystal from Cirus II. When Bezzem inquires about the extended duration, Tem begins to recount the events of the past.
A younger Tem Chesko, at twenty-two years old, is in discussion with the mine supervisor on Cirus II, who assures him of a return to his home world within a fortnight. Tem boards his vessel, initiates the launch sequence, and begins to relax, only for the ship to be impacted by an asteroid. The resulting impact damages both the ship's hyperdrive and comlink, cutting off all communication. Calculating the distance to the nearest planet at ten parsecs, Tem realizes it would take no less than sixty years to reach it. Tem spent eight years aboard the ship, his sanity diminishing with each passing day, until he stumbled upon an emergency glass panel. In a drunken stupor, Tem hurled his bottle at the glass, revealing a female, green service droid. This droid, whom Tem named Millie, diligently cared for both Tem and the ship for many years, until she detected a planet on the viewing screen.
Though uninhabited, Tem decided to land on the planet, seeking a change of scenery. Shortly after disembarking, Tem was attacked by a large, green plant-like creature, which Millie swiftly dispatched. As the years continued to pass, Tem found himself reminiscing about his former girlfriend Maia, now likely a grandmother. One morning, Tem awoke to find the ship had landed once more, soon discovering Millie in a nearby pond, attempting to short-circuit herself due to jealousy over Maia. Tem dissuaded her, and as he aged and weakened, she continued her care. At the age of eighty-six, lying in his bed, Tem requested Millie to end his life, handing her his laser knife. Tem informs Bezzem that this was the most difficult day he experienced. Bezzem wonders how Tem is still alive and what became of Millie, to which Tem responds by showing Millie's mechanical parts now integrated into his chest.
