Tanner Carzyn was a Galactic Empire tech specialist in his teens, serving Moff Kentor Sarne on the planet Kal'Shebbol. Later in his life, he became a member of the crew aboard the New Republic CR90 corvette known as the FarStar.
Living his entire life under the rule of the Empire, Carzyn was born in the Colonies and moved frequently with his parents, who were always in search of elusive business ventures. They relocated to the Minos Cluster, and eventually established a permanent residence on Kal'Shebbol. Carzyn's aspiration was to enlist in the Imperial military as a gunner, a dream that was shattered by the Imperial defeat during the Battle of Endor. After realizing that the Academy would never consider his application, he attempted to join Moff Sarne's ground troops.
Sarne's government accepted Carzyn into their service, but not in a combat role. Instead, he was assigned as a technician. His duties included the repair and maintenance of weapon systems on both capital ships and ground-based fortifications. When the New Republic successfully liberated Kal'Shebbol in 8 ABY, Carzyn, along with many other non-essential personnel, was abandoned by Sarne. Feeling deeply betrayed, Carzyn vowed to exact revenge upon the Moff.
Carzyn falsely claimed to New Republic forces that Moff Sarne had enslaved and betrayed his family. Using this deception, he secured a position as a weapons technician aboard the FarStar. His responsibilities included the upkeep of the ship's turbolasers and the starfighter weapon systems. While outwardly displaying loyalty to the New Republic, he secretly planned to abandon his post when the FarStar encountered Sarne's forces. Despite his feelings of betrayal, Carzyn was conflicted. He was torn between pursuing Sarne himself, or defecting and joining Sarne's cause.
Carzyn was completely dedicated to the Empire, as he believed it was the most effective way to maintain order throughout the galaxy. Consequently, he showed complete loyalty to Moff Sarne following the Empire's fragmentation after the Battle of Endor.
Carzyn experienced conflicting emotions after Sarne abandoned him on Kal'Shebbol. On one side, he desired vengeance against the Moff for abandoning him despite his unwavering loyalty. However, he also contemplated defecting and rejoining the Moff's ranks. Throughout his time on the FarStar, he struggled with this internal conflict.
