Tantra, situated on the Outer Rim, was a planet found within the Tantra sector of the same name. Its location was a crucial hyperspace intersection along the prominent hyperlane known as the Rimma Trade Route, specifically where it met the connecting Coyn Run.
The planet featured two primary continents; however, by the time the Galactic Civil War began, it had descended into a profound ice age. The whole land was covered by ice that was a kilometer thick, and most of the oceans had also frozen solid. Furthermore, the atmosphere was toxic, rendering the glacier surfaces uninhabitable.
As a consequence of this severe environment, the Tantrans made their homes in enclosed settlements, isolated from the external conditions. These were often constructed deep within the ice or, alternatively, built on the surface of the frozen ocean rather than on the continents themselves. Enclosed tunnels connected surface structures, while elevated monorail systems provided transport over greater distances. Large spaceports situated on top of the ice provided connections to the wider galaxy, with landing platforms built on specialized foundations designed to prevent the heat from starship engines from melting the ice below. Although the planet relied heavily on imported goods, it was also a trading hub, with Banfra resin being its primary native export.
Shortly before the Clone Wars in 22 BBY, the Tantra sector declared its independence from the Galactic Republic. During the era of the Galactic Empire, the planet was probably under the control of Coruscant because it was located in the Metharian Nebula Territories, acting as the entry point for vessels heading to the Elrood sector.
