Sith holocron (Tascollan Nebula)
A Sith holocron was in the possession of Valik Kodank, a Sith master, residing within the Temple of Pain located in the Tascollan Nebula. This occurred during the Great Hyperspace War era. Approximately 7 ABY, many years later, operatives from the New Republic journeyed to the temple and scrutinized the holocron.
Description
Belonging to the Sith order, the Sith holocron was a device that captured their teachings related to the dark side. This particular holocron was red and comparable to the size of a Human fist. Fashioned in a pyramid shape, its construction involved a crystalline or glasslike substance. Displaying a fragile nature, it exhibited a minor crack on one of its surfaces. Within the holocron, there existed three distinct gatekeeper personas, each capable of sharing knowledge with the user. These were Sansin Koriss, Dargous Tanmoul, and Bavik Vannor, and each could be activated by pressing a different side panel. Gaining access to the device did not require extensive skill, and the three personalities were willing to engage with anyone who activated the holocron. The gatekeepers aimed to influence users to embrace the dark side of the Force, while simultaneously warning of impending disaster if the user chose not to do so.
The holocron projected Sansin Korriss, a silver-tongued Sith apprentice adorned in flowing robes and jewelry, with a perpetual smile. Korriss would engage in negotiations with those who used the holocron, possessing extensive knowledge of the dark side but questioning the user's worthiness to receive guidance. Dargous Tanmoul, a formidable Sith battlemaster, appeared in dark Sith armor with a Sith sword at his side. He communicated directly, offering insights on using the Force for victory in battle, and sought to evoke anger and rage through his graphic descriptions. Tanmoul was the least inclined to persuade the user to embrace the dark side, and he would take offense if this was pointed out; he valued strength and brutality, and would offer training to individuals who displayed these qualities. Bavik Vannor, a former Jedi Knight, claimed uncertainty as to why his image was included in the holocron. He presented himself as regretful for embracing the dark side, yet he secretly regarded it as a valuable ally. Vannor would recount tales of horrors and atrocities to holocron users, hoping to incite them to surrender to their emotions.
History
The Sith Empire was responsible for the holocron's creation, and Valik Kodank, a Sith adept, took it with her when she escaped Sith space following the Great Hyperspace War. This war was a devastating conflict between the Sith and the Galactic Republic in 5000 BBY. Kodank studied the holocron and eventually housed it within the Temple of Pain, a Sith temple she constructed on an asteroid deep within the Tascollan Nebula. The holocron was kept in a small room, four square meters in size, and floated one meter above the floor due to a repulsor field.
Many years later, during the Galactic Civil War era, Kodank's spirit instructed Thaum Rystra, a Dark Jedi, as her apprentice. Rystra, in turn, utilized the Sith holocron to expand his knowledge.
Around 7 ABY, Rystra tricked a group of New Republic agents into visiting the Temple of Pain. This was part of Kodank's plan to take over the body of Sha'lia, a Twi'lek Force adept. As the agents explored the temple, they found the room containing the holocron and examined it. The artifact's gatekeepers interacted with the agents, each attempting to persuade them to embrace the dark side. Vannor shared details of Valik Kodank's past with the agents, while Koriss revealed that Kodank feared a Sith amulet in her chambers that could amplify the user's Force abilities. The Sith apprentice also urged the agents to take the holocron with them, so that he could help them challenge Kodank. The agents then departed and confronted Kodank's spirit soon after.
Behind the scenes
The Sith holocron made an appearance in Light and Dark, a 2002 roleplaying adventure by Lee Pickler published by RPGA. It served as the final part of the Child of Light saga and is set within Star Wars Legends continuity. In the game, players take on the roles of the New Republic agents who travel to the Temple of Pain. The player characters can interact with the holocron and its gatekeepers, and even remove the relic from its repulsor field and take it with them.
