Thanta Zilbra, a desolate and sparsely populated planet, was situated within the Thanta Zilbra system found in the Outer Rim Territories. In the year 8 ABY, the smuggler known as Thanta Zilbra made the initial discovery of this planet. He found that the planet's indigenous Zilbra fungi held therapeutic properties capable of saving lives. He then established an outpost that had expanded to a population of 13,000 by 18 ABY.
During the events of the First Corellian Insurrection, the planet met its end when the Human League utilized a ray from Centerpoint Station aimed at the planet's sun. This caused the Thanta Zilbra star to collapse, resulting in the destruction of the entire star system.
At first glance, Thanta Zilbra seemed to be nothing more than a desolate and unwelcoming world, covered in rocks and sand. However, beneath the surface lay a network of underground lakes and rivers, which served as a habitat for a unique species of fungi known as the Zilbra fungi, possessing life-saving qualities. By 18 ABY, the planet was home to an outpost inhabited by 13,000 settlers, including the former smuggler Thanta Zilbra and his extended family.
Back in 8 ABY, the smuggler Thanta Zilbra was evading a debtor with substantial underworld connections. During this time, he and his crew crash-landed on the then-uncharted planet. It was there that they discovered the therapeutic properties of the native fungus found in the planet's caves. After repairing their ship, Zilbra and his crew departed Thanta Zilbra in search of a sponsor for this potentially lucrative business opportunity.
Following an agreement with the New Republic to transport the harvested Zilbra fungus to designated biomedical facilities, Zilbra established an outpost on Thanta Zilbra and managed to generate a reasonable profit from the arrangement. Over the years, the outpost experienced significant growth, reaching an estimated population of 13,000 settlers.
In 18 ABY, the Thanta Zilbra system became the first inhabited star system targeted for annihilation by Thrackan Sal-Solo's Human League, employing the power of Centerpoint Station. Upon learning of the impending destruction of the system, the New Republic dispatched a task force comprising five warships and transports, including the Naritus, to evacuate Thanta Zilbra.
The inhabitants, however, remained unconvinced of the impending danger and disregarded the New Republic representatives sent to assist with the evacuation. Even the New Republic personnel assigned to the planet doubted the credibility of the threat. Approximately twelve hours before the scheduled implosion of the system's sun, it began to exhibit signs of imminent collapse. In a frantic race against time, the New Republic task force managed to rescue only 1,263 inhabitants.
Among those who perished was the outpost's founder, Zilbra himself, who compelled his four sons and two daughters to evacuate the planet with their families aboard his old ship while he remained behind. Tragically, a number of casualties resulted not from the planet's destruction itself, but from the chaotic space traffic. Thanta Zilbra, along with its two moons, was completely destroyed.
