The Empire Strikes Back (Mighty Chronicles)

The Empire Strikes Back is an illustrated Mighty Chronicles adaptation of the movie Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back from 1980. Chronicle Books released it in December of 1996. This book features 144 illustrations rendered in hues of blue and black.

Differences from the film

  • Despite being launched to celebrate the "Special Edition" trilogy, the story and its images portray only the original 1980 theatrical version of the movie. Examples are the wampa concealed inside its cave and the hall ways without windows of Cloud City.
  • The moment where Leia kisses Luke as he recovers on Hoth is not included. Within the book, the scene concludes immediately after Han says to Luke, "That's two you owe me."
  • Initially, Yoda is called an "imp" when he is introduced. However, the picture's caption refers to him by his actual name.
  • The illustration shows Yoda striking R2-D2 with his cane as he tries to take Luke's lamp, but it is not mentioned in the written narrative.
  • The demise of Captain Needa is not shown.
  • The dueling between Luke and Vader continues uninterrupted from the freezing chamber to the window scene. There isn't a break where Luke searches for Vader in between these two duels.
