The first hint of The Star Wars Show surfaced on May 10, 2016, with the inaugural episode launching on May 11, 2016. New episodes were broadcast every Wednesday (except during hiatus periods) at 12 p.m. Pacific Time. Initially, Andi Gutierrez and Peter Townley were the hosts. In January 2017, Anthony Carboni took over Townley's hosting duties.

On August 4, 2016, The Star Wars After Show made its debut on the Verizon YouTube channel. This sister series featured members of Lucasfilm discussing the week's Star Wars happenings alongside the hosts of The Star Wars Show.

Beginning in January 2020, the show's frequency shifted from weekly to monthly, with new episodes released on the last Wednesday of each month. To cover the weekly news previously featured on The Star Wars Show, a new show titled This Week! in Star Wars, hosted by Kristin Baver, was launched.

On December 16, 2020, Gutierrez and Carboni, the show's hosts, announced that The Star Wars Show would be going on hiatus for an unspecified duration, though they would still appear in occasional videos. This episode included behind-the-scenes footage from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, an interview with Dave Filoni, and highlight clips from past The Star Wars Show episodes.
