The Thyrsian special forces represented the elite special forces branch within the Thyrsian military. These forces belonged to a subspecies of the Echani, and they fought for their freedom from Echani Command originating from the planet Thyrsus during the Begali Uprising which took place in the year 1154 BBY. Subsequently, by the time the Pact of Almera acknowledged Thyrsian sovereignty in 899 BBY, this unit had transformed into the semi-nomadic Sun Guard fighters.
