Tognath

Tognath, a sentient species, originated from the planet of Yar Togna, their homeworld. Their distinctive appearance stemmed from a combination of insectoid and mammalian traits, coupled with both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton. Furthermore, their rudimentary nervous system granted them a high pain threshold, a useful characteristic for warriors. The mercenaries known as Edrio and Benthic "Two Tubes" belonged to this species.

Biology and appearance

The Tognath, an ancient species, evolved on the high-gravity volcanic world of Yar Togna. They are humanoid beings displaying a blend of insectoid and mammalian features. These tall, lean beings share a distant genetic link with the Kel Dor and Gand species, although scholars remain uncertain whether this connection is due to evolution or experimentation. Their skin is pale and fleshy, complemented by a hairless exoskeleton that provides protection against the intense atmospheric pressure of their native planet. Their compound eyes lack eyelids, and their vocal cords produce a deep, resonant voice that is nearly inaudible to other species without technological assistance.

Tognath larvae hatch from clutches of eggs suspended in a nurturing jelly. While immersed in this jelly, two or more eggs, potentially from different parents, are sometimes joined together, creating a lasting bond between the resulting eggmates. Upon hatching, the parasitic larvae attach themselves to one of their parents, feeding directly from their bloodstream for a period of six months. After acquiring the necessary nutrients, the larval Tognath are transported to a nursery tree, where they spin cocoons and undergo metamorphosis. Within the safety of these cocoons, the young Tognath develop both an endoskeleton and an exoskeleton over several months, further reducing the sensitivity of their already dulled nervous system. Upon emerging from their cocoons, young Tognath resemble smaller versions of their adult counterparts.

Tognath commonly choose to enhance their natural abilities through cybernetic modifications. Due to their reduced pain sensitivity, the process of integrating metal into their bodies is relatively straightforward. Many opt to improve their poor hearing and balance with technology, add specialized lenses to their eyes, and incorporate breathing apparatus to process the oxygen levels in a planet's atmosphere.

Society and culture

On the high-gravity world of Yar Togna, Tognath inhabit dwellings raised on stilts above the lava flows that crisscross their planet. They cluster around the main mountain range to access the natural springs, living and working in a challenging environment.

Behind the scenes

The Tognath's breathing apparatus are inspired by gas masks used during First and Second World Wars.
