A Training squadron was a squadron of starfighters comprised of cadets. These cadets had successfully completed their initial pilot training but were not yet prepared for active combat duty. Ideally, the members of a training squadron would remain together to form a cohesive combat unit upon activation. During their time in the training squadron, pilots would refine their skills by learning advanced maneuvers specific to their craft, practicing group battle tactics to foster familiarity with each other's flying styles and personalities, and gaining a deeper understanding of various aspects of being a fighter pilot.
Within the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and subsequently in the New Republic's Starfighter Command, training squadrons were guided by experienced combat veterans. These seasoned pilots were often reassigned from frontline units to lead and instruct these developing squadrons. Their responsibilities included overseeing exercises, enforcing discipline, and ultimately, evaluating and reporting on the squadron's readiness for deployment. Upon activation, the training squadron would transition into a fully operational combat squadron, with all members becoming active-duty pilots, a practice consistent with the training philosophies of both the Alliance and the New Republic.
