Troy Kotsur, an American actor who is deaf, is the individual who conceived Tusken Sign Language for the Disney+ live-action series The Mandalorian and later for The Book of Boba Fett.
In the fifth episode of The Mandalorian, he appeared as a Tusken Raider. Initially, he was only brought on board to develop the language itself. The production team was unaware of his acting ability, and he chose not to disclose it to avoid any perception of ingratiation. After his manager informed them of Kotsur's acting background, he was then chosen to portray the leading Tusken Raider.
Kotsur received an Academy Award in 2022 for his performance as Frank Rossi in the movie CODA.
