Unidentified animal rights group
A collective of animal rights advocates sought to put an end to the employment of thrantas—a species of sizable, winged beings—in air rodeos.
History
The group ultimately resolved to take action beyond simple protests and demonstrations at the rodeos. To demonstrate the feelings of thrantas during transport, when they are denied the sunlight needed for photosynthetic energy production, the group abducted an air rodeo owner and subjected her to starvation for a period of one week.
Following the owner's capture by the activists, a team of well-known individuals were requested to undertake her rescue. As the group made no demand for ransom, the husband of the owner offered compensation to the volunteers for their work in securing his wife's release.
Behind the scenes
This animal rights group initially surfaced as an adventure concept within Rodeo Thranta. Jeff Quick authored this article as a part of the Creature Feature series for the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, which was available on the website of Wizards of the Coast. Its release occurred on December 12, 2002, and the adventure ideas were designed for gamemasters to implement anytime following the initial use of thrantas in air rodeos, which predated the destruction of the thrantas' home planet, Alderaan.
