In the year 3 ABY, a wampa of the male variety resided within a cave network that later became known as Echo Base, coexisting with a clan. The establishment of Echo Base forced the wampa clan to abandon their home while the wampa was away on a hunt, compelling the wampa to seek refuge in a different cave alone. Prior to the Battle of Hoth, the wampa ambushed Luke Skywalker and his tauntaun, killing the tauntaun and dragging the incapacitated Skywalker back to its cave. While the wampa devoured the tauntaun's flesh, Skywalker eventually regained consciousness and liberated himself by employing his lightsaber, severing the wampa's right arm just before it could attack. The wampa eventually regained its strength, allowing it to leave its cave. After deciding he was strong enough, the wampa made its way back to the valley of Echo Base, only to discover the caverns deserted following the Battle of Hoth. Consequently, the wampa reclaimed its former dwelling, harboring the hope of reuniting with its clan. A depiction of the wampa was subsequently featured in "Species From A to Z," a survival guide distributed by Carson Teva during the New Republic Era, which alluded to Skywalker's encounter with the creature.
The wampa made its initial appearance in the 1980 original trilogy movie, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. Within the Star Wars Legends reference work Inside the Worlds of Star Wars Trilogy, this particular wampa was characterized as two distinct entities: a female wampa named One-Arm and an unnamed male. This wampa serves as the Canon equivalent of both of these creatures.
During the filming of the scene, Mark Hamill believed Luke would simply frighten the wampa away with his lightsaber. He was shocked by the amputation in the final cut, feeling Luke wouldn't commit such a brutal act.
Despite the Star Wars Day-at-a-Time Calendar 2020, released in 2019 by Trends International, asserting the wampa's demise, the 2020 short story "Hunger," penned by Mark Oshiro and featured in the book From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back, clarifies that the wampa eventually gathered sufficient strength to once again emerge from its cave.
