Battle droid
Trade Federation B1-series battle droid, B2 super battle droid, and droideka are pictured here, during the time of the Clone Wars.
A battle droid (which can also be called a war droid, combat droid, battle bot, or killer droid) referred to any droid specifically created for use in battle.
Droids made exclusively for fighting were not very common and were against the law in the Galactic Republic.
There existed a wide range of battle droid models. Their existence goes back thousands of years before the Galactic Republic, with the Rakatan guardian droids and the war-robots utilized by Xim the Despot being some of the earliest on record.
The Eternal Empire primarily used battle droids, known as Skytroopers, as their standard foot soldiers.
Some of the most recognizable battle droids are those that the Confederacy of Independent Systems employed during the period of the Clone Wars.
Once the Clone Wars ended, the Sith Lord Darth Vader deactivated the majority of the Separatist Droid Army by switching off the Master control signal. Following this event, battle droids became a rare sight.
A common characteristic among most battle droids was their limited cognitive ability. They were designed to simply carry out commands, with little independent thought, although they often possessed distinct personalities. However, certain battle droids had a more advanced level of intelligence; these more sophisticated droids were more difficult and costly to produce, due to their complex processors, and were therefore manufactured in smaller numbers. Examples include the BX-series droid commando, the IG-100 MagnaGuard, and, excluding the initial designs, the Droideka.
