During the time of 0 BBY, which was also the era of the Galactic Civil War, I662 found itself on a Jawa sandcrawler, whose proprietors would eventually seize the Rebel Alliance automatons C-3PO and R2-D2. Biography

WED-15-I662, with the alias Eye-Six-Six-Too, was a WED-15 Treadwell repair droid that Cybot Galactica brought into existence, sometime prior to the Battle of Yavin. During 0 BBY, amidst the Galactic Civil War, I662 was present on a Jawa sandcrawler under the control of Chief Nebit's group when the scavengers took into their possession the Rebel protocol droid C-3PO and his partner, the astromech droid R2-D2. On the following day, the sandcrawler came to a halt at the residence of moisture farmer Owen Lars, where the Jawas intended to vend a selection of their droids. During the selling event, I662 was on the verge of exiting the droid enclosure within the crawler to unite with the other droids outside, but a Jawa intervened.

The Jawas achieved success in their auction, successfully selling both C-3PO and R2-D2 to Lars. Shortly thereafter, Imperial sandtroopers boarded the sandcrawler, seeking the pilfered blueprints of the Death Star war station, which were safeguarded within R2-D2. Trooper 1023 noticed I662 while he was searching the droid bay for C-3PO and R2-D2. Nevertheless, the sandtroopers were unable to locate the plans, leading the Imperials to subsequently annihilate the sandcrawler.

Characteristics

WED-15-I662 represented a typical Treadwell unit, mirroring the countless droids dedicated to the upkeep and mending of substantial machinery and starfighters. I662 was characterized by a blue color scheme and featured two rows, each comprising ten treaded wheels, on its base. The droid was equipped with binocular fine-focus vision, facilitating the identification of circuitry impairments. I662's black photoreceptors were positioned on a slender, extendable neck strut, which also supported its manipulator arms.

Behind the scenes

John Barry's production sketch of a Treadwell droid

In 1975, the WED-15 unit model was conceived by production designer John Barry for utilization in George Lucas's 1977 cinematic work, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The model was employed for WED-15-I662, in addition to the droid WED-15-77 and another Treadwell during the movie's production. Barry's sketch specified that the model's height ranged from four feet to four feet, six inches. Barry's notes indicated that the prop possessed a functional arm and contained a radio controller within its treadwell base, enabling off-screen crew members to manipulate it. The scenes featuring the droid were captured on location in Tunisia during March 1976.

I662 made its initial appearance in the debut issue of Marvel Comics' adaptation of the film, situated within the Jawas' sandcrawler. The comic was released on April 12, 1977, preceding I662's live-action depiction in the film itself. The droid remained unnamed until 1995, when the base set of Decipher's Star Wars Customizable Card Game identified it as "WED15-I662." Subsequently, in 2008, The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia incorporated a second hyphen into the droid's designation, aligning it with the naming conventions of other Treadwell droids.
