Xan Lanier started as an Imperial cadet within the ranks of the Galactic Empire. He initially appeared to be a good prospect, earning entry to the officer training academy situated on Arkanis; however, he ultimately ranked among the least successful students there. While at the Arkanis Academy, he was placed in a squad of five alongside fellow cadets Chan Harra, Zare Leonis, Tigard Manes, and Anya Razar, who held the position of squad leader. Before an exercise, Razar assured Leonis that Lanier was the worst student and not to worry about him. During the exercise, Lanier was killed by live ammunition. The event was later revealed to be a component of a test enabling Razar's acceptance into a clandestine organization within the academy known as the Commandant's Cadets.
