XLT-014 labor droid

The XLT-014 labor droid, a loader droid variant, was manufactured by Publictechnic during the period spanning three decades before 22 BBY. While its carrying capacity was less than that of larger droids like binary loadlifters, the XLT-014 could access a broader range of locations due to the repulsorlifts integrated into its feet. These droids featured advanced scanning equipment for interpreting cargo container labels and manifests; however, their limited cognitive abilities sometimes presented challenges for their owners. Throughout its production years, the model found use among small businesses, affluent individuals, and large corporations. Despite being designed as a labor droid, the XLT-014 also functioned as a servant, and in some cases, it underwent modifications to serve as a pilot, an assistant for mechanics, or even an infiltrator.

Description

The XLT-014 labor droid was a class five loader droid exhibiting a roughly humanoid form, complete with two legs, a torso, and a head. Rather than arms, it possessed two elongated, flat claw-like appendages designed for transporting cargo containers. This model incorporated repulsorlifts within its three-toed feet, enabling the droids to elevate cargo to areas inaccessible to standard labor droids; these repulsorlifts emitted a blue light when active. Standing at 1.5 meters in height, the droids had a durasteel outer shell; one common color scheme involved a predominantly yellow body, with orange leg sides and a red head top. The droid model included a video recorder and highly capable sensors which could scan cargo labels and manifests, along with detecting energy signatures and lifeforms within a radius of approximately nine meters. The sensor on its head was sometimes colored blue.

Role

An unmodified XLT-014 was capable of performing basic tasks like cargo handling, simple domestic duties, and routine office work. While its cargo-lifting capabilities were useful, they were far below those of larger droids such as the binary loadlifter. The XLT-014 lacked the necessary processor for autonomous thought, relying on control via an installed remote receiver. Droids of the XLT-014 series were not particularly bright and sometimes exhibited excessive reading speed, a trait that could cause issues for their users. A droid supervisor identified as EV-6T6 attributed this quirk to the droids' tendency towards overconfidence. Despite this perceived drawback, EV-6T6 considered the droid design to be durable and dependable. XLT-014 labor droids also demonstrated proficiency in using computers, and they were equipped with vocabulators enabling them to communicate in both Galactic Basic Standard and binary.

History

Publictechnic, a droid manufacturing company, conceived and produced the XLT-014 labor droid during the three decades preceding the Clone Wars, which occurred from 22 to 19 BBY and pitted the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. During this period, the droid was priced at 9,600 credits and was accessible to authorized individuals. XLT-014 droids were often utilized in conjunction with binary loadlifters for cargo-handling operations to expedite tasks for organic workers. Beyond their function as cargo handlers in corporate distribution centers, these droids were frequently employed by wealthy individuals as household staff and by small enterprises for routine office duties. Wealthy business owners sometimes modified XLT-014 units to function as pilots, a more economical alternative to purchasing a dedicated pilot droid. This task involved reprogramming the droids and typically equipping them with basic processors, hands, enhanced sensors, and sometimes a scomp link for direct interface with flight control systems. Another common modification involved programming the droid as an assistant for mechanics by installing a heuristic processor for improved learning and creativity, different appendages, diagnostics tools, and a storage compartment capable of holding approximately five kilograms of tools. The droid's relatively compact size also inspired some individuals to modify the XLT-014 for infiltration purposes, equipping it with security tools, a heuristic processor, and upgrades such as enhanced sensors and sound-dampening for the repulsorlifts.

During the Galactic Republic era, XLT-014 labor droids were in service aboard the cruise ship Galactic Breeze. One such droid was reprogrammed to manipulate the starship's computer, causing it to navigate to an incorrect location. The resulting deviation led to the Galactic Breeze's capture by a group of pirates near the planet Bestine IV.

Behind the scenes

The droid codex within Scavenger's Guide to Droids, a 2009 sourcebook for Wizards of the Coast's Saga Edition of the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, featured the XLT-014 labor droid. Rodney Thompson, Sterling Hershey, Patrick Stutzman, and Robert Wieland authored the book. Players could utilize the droid as a template during character creation within the game.
