The Yentarr represented a deity-like concept in the belief system of the profoundly devout and contemplative Bosph species. For the Bosph, Yentarr signified mysterious spirits, and unexplained phenomena were considered to be the result of actions by the Yentarr. One such phenomenon was the Force, which the Bosph referred to as abo b'Yentarr, translating to the power of the gods. In Bosph society, individuals who could wield abo b'Yentarr were called Ela b'Yentarr and were integrated into various government factions of the species to govern their homeworld, Bosph. Following the Galactic Empire's bombardment of the Bosph homeworld after discovering the Force-sensitive members of the government, the Bosph adopted a policy of deliberate forgetting towards the Empire, refusing to acknowledge them as the greatest insult they could offer. Instead, the devastation and death caused by the bombardment were attributed to a punitive act by the Yentarr.
The Yentarr were initially introduced in the thirteenth edition of the Star Wars roleplaying game supplement series, Star Wars Adventure Journals, produced by West End Games. The article in which they appeared provided a comprehensive description of the Bosph species and formed part of the Alien Encounters series. Brian Smithson authored it, and it was released in 1997. Some details from the article, including the Yentarr, were subsequently republished in Alien Encounters, a West End Games supplement book compiled by Jen Seiden and published in 1998.
