In 10,000 BBY, the historian Vicendi included the barge in the Twenty Wonders of the Galaxy—a list of spectactular, antique artificial objects compiled for the publication Arturum Galactinum. The Ark of Baron Auletphant at one point became lost in space, remaining so for ten millennia. In 520 BBY, the ship became housed in the Baobab Archives on the planet Manda.
The Ark of Baron Auletphant was introduced in the 2009 reference book The Essential Atlas by Daniel Wallace and Jason Fry. Wallace noted in his personal blog that he particularly enjoyed creating names for those of the Twenty Wonders of the Galaxy that were original to the book, which included the Ark of Baron Auletphant. The author specifically created the vessel due to finding an appeal in the idea of a "crazy" individual collecting in his golden spaceship fish from various galactic locations. Wallace also quipped about the Ark of Baron Auletphant having a "terrible" smell after its rediscovery due to the decomposition of abovementioned aquatic life over the intervening thousands of years.
