Dragonelles were creatures familiar to the Chiss species residing in the Unknown Regions. Circa 37 BBY, these dragonelles were among the preferred subjects for sculpting by Senior Cadet Irizi'ar'alani, whose core name was "Ziara," during her leisure time as a student at the Taharim Academy located on the planet Naporar. Her peer, the cadet Mitth'raw'nuruodo, known as "Thrawn," examined her artwork and accurately deduced from her favored subjects—dragonelles, groundlions, and predatory birds—that she would prefer brief offensives, deceptive hesitations, and an aggressive style in combat. Utilizing this insight, along with other data extracted from Ziara's wire sculptures, Thrawn successfully triumphed over her in a practice duel.
The creatures known as dragonelles were referenced within a retrospective scene in the 2020 book Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, which initiated Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy.
