Echo-3 was an attack formation utilized in naval warfare, which prioritized the defense of a command ship. As such, the formation required the surrendering of other starships within a fleet. In 21 BBY, during the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and Separatist Alliance, Kaleesh Separatist General Grievous issued Echo-3 during the initial phases of his attack on the planet Kamino.
While utilizing the formation, Grievous sacrificed his transports to the Republic blockade in order for the debris from the warships to plummet into the ocean on the planet's surface. The debris concealed several Trident-class assault ships, which were assembled in the ocean and deployed against Tipoca City. However, the battle ultimately ended in victory for the Republic.
