Eyes were the primary visual organ of many sentient and animal species. Most species possessed a single pair of eyes located on their head, although some species, such as Abyssin, had only one eye, while Gran had three, and others, like the Harch and the Dyplotid, possessed several pairs. Yet other species, like the Melitto from Li-Toran, or Miraluka like Prosset Dibs, had no eyes at all, relying on other organs to navigate.
The Chiss had red eyes which could see more infrared than humans, while Kaminoans had large black eyes that could see ultraviolet. Jawas had sickly glowing yellow eyes that they used to peer through the dark folds of the cowls they wore. Rodians had large, round pupil-less eyes. The droid equivalent to an eye was a photoreceptor.
A human's eye color was determined by the pigmentation in the iris. The phenotypic eye color for all clone troopers was brown, because they were all grown from the same clone template, the bounty hunter Jango Fett. This also applied to the mutated Clone Force 99, as their mutation did not affect the iris pigmentation. A human parent could pass on their eye color to their offspring – Ben Solo had the same piercing brown eyes as his mother Leia Organa, who was sure that this feature was inherited from her own birth mother, Padmé Amidala. As a child, Leia used to see kindness in eyes of her adoptive father Bail Organa and, despite knowing she was adopted, used to hope she saw the same kindness in her own eyes.
Eyes acted as windows to the soul, and so reflected the emotions that the Sith harnessed. A dark side user's eyes would sometimes change color and burn yellow with a fiery red rim when rage and anger seethed inside them. Anakin Skywalker's eyes changed color in this way as he massacred the Executive Separatist Council on the planet Mustafar in 19 BBY, radiating anger and hate. Nevertheless, Skywalker's eyes returned to their normal shade upon the arrival of his wife, Padmé Amidala.
When tutoring Luke Skywalker in the use of the Force, Obi-Wan Kenobi warned him that his eyes could deceive him and suggested not to trust them. To prove his point, he blindfolded Skywalker, after which Skywalker was successful in deflecting shots from a training remote with his lightsaber by drawing upon the power of the Force.
When the redeemed Anakin Skywalker was mortally wounded after killing the Emperor to save his son, his last request was for Luke to remove his helmet so that he could look on his son with his own eyes instead of through the filters of his mask.
Kanan Jarrus' eyes were destroyed by Maul with his lightsaber, rendering him blind. Cybernetic replacements were available, however, as shown by Clone Commander Wolffe, whose right eye was destroyed by Asajj Ventress.
